Title: Where in the World
Post by: Geoffw on March 04, 2012, 10:06:28 pm
Let us just use this thread from now on, just add each photo as the challenge progresses...

Well here we are - somewhere I have never visited, and am unlikely to see unless I win the Lottery!

For those of you puzzling how Colin could identify my picture, just right-click on it with your mouse!

Basic error if you are uploading a picture change its name.  I did do that but then foolishly uploaded the original.

......... so having found out the name of the bay just use Google to find out where it is.  When you have found out you will understand why I've never been there!  :D

Somewhere on the French Coast defense line left over from World War 2 ?. It looks like French sea!!!!.
That's a queer tube on top of the barrel surely not for aiming or perhaps hydraulic/spring dampening from gun recoil. :(

There do not seem to have been many clues since last Tuesday Brian-this could run until Xmas 2012!!1  ;D
Are they guns I wonder or viewing/ ranging devices-certainly look's military?.
Give us a hint for location, location , location!! :(.
Did not see anything like them when I watched the Wales v Italy match at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday  ;D ;) ;D ;)

You may find cress nearby
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: jarcadia on March 12, 2012, 09:31:46 pm
OK ....no takers on that clue so how about....... a nearby river that in France makes the record books but not in the world.  Should be easy now.
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: welshcol on March 12, 2012, 11:22:48 pm
Looks a lovely spot Brian, but the best known water-cress, if that's the right cress  :( are all in mainland France and not on the coast. In saying that the stream in the picture looks nice a clear as if coming from some chalk spring somewhere!!!. I will study the map again. ;D

Same country..... why would a river make the record books? Guns are marine not land based normally
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: Arturo on March 14, 2012, 12:54:48 pm
could find .cress nearby,.........would this be the sort of cress you eat or is it CRESS with capital letters.  By the way good morning one and all.
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: jarcadia on March 14, 2012, 02:02:48 pm
Edible but what is special about the river is the key to the area.  The guns are within walking distance but not alongside the river.
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: Arturo on March 14, 2012, 05:28:48 pm
Gun installations, I did fleetingly think of the channel Isles, especially Jersey.  The channel isles are known as L'iles Normandes so could strictly be considered as part of  the Normandy Coast.  As the Channel Isles dont have any rivers to talk about, that lets that out.  You mention the trout being protected, "Truite a la Normande"  is considered as the local delicacy.  I dont suppose any of this helps,  but we're getting desperate!
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: jarcadia on March 14, 2012, 05:42:47 pm
Very interesting info Colin but not relevant

OK Clues and informed guesses so far:- (and an extra hint)
Marine guns not normally landbased (perhaps from a wreck to commemorate an event).
WW2.
Normandy coast.
Within walking distance of a river that makes the record book for France but not the world.
Cress grown in this river and brown trout protected.
A tenuous horticultural link to the name of the village.

As this post has run for a week I will post the answer tomorrow unless it is worked out this evening or I am requested not to reveal it.
Brian

Post by: Arturo on March 14, 2012, 05:53:08 pm
I think I might be on to something, The record books show the smallest river in France, also famous for its cress.  The river is the Veule  I think it was Veule les Roses the little picture you posted.   Come on lads find the military connection and we've got it By George We've got it.

Thank goodness you are back on the case Colin-I was just about getting suicidal and its the Wales v France match on Friday. ;D ;D
I still cannot understand the nautical/land clue about the gun unless they were taken off a ship then placed ashore for land protection. :(
Brian's clues are as profound and contorted as yours!!!. ;), although I am sure it will all be obvious when we know the answer. :)
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: welshcol on March 14, 2012, 06:09:32 pm
Got them!!!.
They are the guns off the the Cargo Boat P21 "Cerons".
see :-http://www.ww2museums.com/article/20771/Guns-of-Cargo-Boat-P21-Cerons.htm (http://www.ww2museums.com/article/20771/Guns-of-Cargo-Boat-P21-Cerons.htm)
We will see if we are right now!!!. :(
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: jarcadia on March 14, 2012, 06:22:10 pm
And I thought that one would be too easy for you  ;)
These two 100mm-guns are from the French armoured cargo boat P21 "Cerons", which was involved in the evacuation of 300 British soldiers on 12 June 1940. She ran aground and after  transferring the soldiers to another ship, she kept on fighting until the crew were taken prisoner of war.

The wreck of the ship itself still is visible at low tide. The guns were brought ashore in 1995 to be used as a memorial.
Veule les Roses is the village and the guns are on the cliffs outside the village.
The Veule is the shortest river in France and they do still grow some cress there.  As for the trout you could easily pick them out with a net, they do not fear people as ordinary ones do.  A very nice village to walk around.

Not so intrigued as how you found the river from Brian's clues!!
My logic was "search" guns in your Veule les Roses village and there they were.
The smallest river. :) :)-still a very good and interesting journey around the French coast line.

I was brought up in the area betwen Cardiff and Newport so the transporter was a familiar sight.  My parents declared it to be a "White elephant",  I never really understood this.  It was just a mucky old bridge.  Looking at the pictures on the net, what a wonderful job they have done in restoring it.  Congrats to all concerned.

Just before the rugby starts!

The Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers) is a pre-Hispanic ceremony in Mexico. The Voladores perform a dance, then climb to the top of a 30-meter pole.

We saw these a few years back, not a job for the faint hearted.

"At the Tulum ruins the Papantla Flyers perform a pre-Hispanic ritual dedicated to the Sun God. The Papantla Flyers climb a 90 foot pole to the eerie and haunting sounds of a flute and a drum. Dressed in their magnificent native costumes these men lash themselves to the pole with a leather binding and soar off into space backwards and upside down in the ultimate leap of faith.
The Papantla Flyers, are Totonac Indians performing an ancient fertility ceremony. As they slowly descend to earth, the 13 revolutions made by the four flyers equal the 52-year span of the Aztec century. The flyers represent earth, water, fire and air, and the interweaving of these four elements symbolizes the creation of new life. A fifth man is left on top, dancing on this tiny nine-inch platform while simultaneously playing both a pre-Columbian flute and drum".

So we got it wrong....... I'll try to narrow it down to Venice or Florence with Florence being my favored destination as you entered from Greece. You should therefore have been heading home.

Yes Europe
Clues so far plus one:-
1. The picture
2. Not in Germany
3. Not Fort George, or even Scotland
4. I'm fairly sure a member would have passed close by on his Odyssey
5. Has an equestrian connection

The clues, as I thought, sent you off track to mainland Europe but we are as you have worked out still in the UK.  As I recall it was a very misty morning when I took the second photo, all the quality, or lack of, is down to natural events.

Is it Chillington Hall?
Home of the Giffards since 1178. Built during 18th century by Francis Smith of Warwick and John Soane. Park designed by 'Capability' Brown. Smith's Staircase, Soane's Saloon and the Pool (a lake of 70 acres) are splendid examples of the days of the Georgian landowner. ...

Is this after the Forum tutorial today?-very good I thought although still cannot get some of the options Geoffw had up but will have another go at picture resizing-I am sure I am missing something obvious somewhere!!!. :(

That "House" of yours looks the same layout as Felbrigg Hall see :- http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Norfolk/Felbrigg/Felbrigg_Hall (http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Norfolk/Felbrigg/Felbrigg_Hall)

That was the inference in Brian's reply #114 ie.... "Getting closer.....not on the river but in the vicinity"-the river being from my guess "Dudmaston House on the river Severn".

Do you know the Bristol area? there are some big houses around there!!! :(

I knew you would get there eventually although I did almost write out the answer for you. :D   Tredegar House stable block is the actual photo.  I thought the ornate gates to the main building might give it away hence the photo taken on a misty morning (last Thursday to be precise).  On any major trip you would almost certainly have to pass close by and of course it is close to Cardiff (Capital).  Well we have traveled far and wide, where next?

I have not not actually ruled out the UK but I will now  :)-you were so close with your German first stab.

I did not know that the walk "list" was in force as yet & still do not agree with the approach which is against the U3A ethic somewhat but I can see the problem that was forseen which the Group leaders had to handle somehow.

Meiringen, Kirche (Church)?
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: welshcol on April 03, 2012, 10:12:39 pm
Well done Geoffw perfectly right- ;D
Shows church and links to Sherlock Holmes and the Reichenbach Falls.
See:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiringen  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiringen)

The town is famous for the Reichenbach Falls, a spectacular water fall that was the setting for the fictional presumed death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes. A museum dedicated to Holmes is located in the basement of the deconsecrated English Church, located in what has now been named Conan Doyle Place.
The town is also known for its claim to have invented meringue and is on the main rail route from Interlaken to Lucerne.

My next clue was going to be the Reinchenbach Falls but you got it anyway. >:( ;)
Title: Re: Where in the World

As Geoffw  says Meiringen famouus for:-
1.The bells from the Meiringen Lutheran church in Switzerland.
2. for the Reichenbach Falls where Sherlock Holmes met his "death"
3. for creating meringues
No wonder you liked the town Welshcol

Slightly off topic
Welshcol I take it that you were inferring that there was a difference between your temperature and the one displayed on Geoffw signature line.  The problem is that your information is static but Geoffw's is live and constantly updated,so only Geoffw will have any idea what the difference was. ;D
So you will have to let us know what you were inferring :D
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: welshcol on April 04, 2012, 12:05:33 pm
Slightly back on topic  ;) when I made the comment I was just comparing Geoffw's "active" and my instantaneous reading with display which is just by my PC , and its the same weather unit, so I guess tolerances should be quite close and historically his reading is 0.5/0.7 deg lower. ;D
Whatever the accuracy i think they are both saying stay indoors and no gardening today!! :) ;D :) ;D
Back off topic i do not know what Geoffw has done but my Google spell checker works first time now rather than fourth attempt. ???
Back on topic have you been to Meiringen? on the Brunig line?. One of the GRJ holidays was using the town as a base for seven days at the Savage Hotel, 50 yards from the railway station, to go to the Jungfrau, Lucerne etc etc. Nice spot. 8)

Geoff / Welshcol.... you have access to my email address so if you email me the responses I will attempt to continue this WITW.  If this does not work out I will pick up the thread on my return.
Clue for you two... you both have something in common with this person (I believe so anyway) but not the same thing
Brian

At Last!!! Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise. ::)
The link to Amboise is that records show that Leonardo da Vinci was buried in the church of Saint-Florentin, which is part of the Ch?teau Amboise.
Leonardo da Vinci ended his life in France in the Clos Luce Manor house , near Amboise in Loire Valley.

Now if you had said I could have given you all in one go.  It was a statue, it was on the river bank, it was surrounded almost by grass and I'm sure I could have got our dog Harley into the photo.  Next time maybe.. ;)
Yes booked in for next week, spotted the thread while in France and posted fora place.

This one should go down to Colin as he did all the legwork, would not want to do him out of a chance to test our skills ;) The ImmigrantsSculptor Luis Sanguino (b. 1934) celebrates the diversity of New York City and the struggle of immigrants in this heroic-sized bronze figural group.  The sculpture depicts figures of various ethnic groups and eras, including an Eastern European Jew, a freed African slave, a priest, and a worker.  The figures? expressive poses emphasize the struggle and toil inherent in the experience of the immigrant or dislocated person

Is it worth thinking about me doing half a picture and you doing half a picture and morph the two together. That would be a real challenge with a No and a Yes being right for the same picture- or due to the depressing weather am I going into Never, Never Land??  :) ;D :) ;D

Cannot fault your train!!! of thought on this one Brian, you are getting too good at this or perhaps I am getting a bit too predictable  ;).

Clue No1 The item certainly has a transport connection but perhaps not the obvious one from the picture! ::)

Certainly is a weird carving or casting!

Can we eliminate London?

Hi - Geoff, certainly is a metal casting- That was Clue 11/2 !! ;D
You may certainly eliminate London if you wish- I would not however, but do not tell Brian. ;)
(BTW did you see the guy's wandering hand ? -I think the sculptor has a good sense of humour  :).)

There is not a lot of logical WITW guessing going on, I guess the Olympics are taking up too much attention and occupying the "little grey cells" !! ::)

Anyway when you have two minutes and to help you on your way :_

Clue No2 A rather fuller version of the cropped picture that posed the question-Good Luck :)

I might make the weekend at this rate which will set an all time record. ;D

Geoff got London, by default! :(, Brian got trains, by default :(!, and you have not got it yet.

Anyway here is Clue No3 which is above the "What Is IT"
and if there is not a flurry of guesses after this then John B... will be turning in his grave!!!

Not Only John Betjeman but also the couple I alluded to in an earier post standing just above this piece. :D If I said the station started with a "St" I would on the right line wouldn't I? ;)

.... was hinting at now-very good  ;) so you obviously had seen the lower bit below "the couple" to know where it was?.
Right give the answer and put the rest out of their misery and I will post the picture. :(
I knew I would not make the weekend. :'( :'( :'( :'(

Place St Pancras, very difficult to find a picture!  I'm sure Colin will explain all :D

Brian right again congratulations :) ;D :) ;D!!!!-

The picture is a small part of the current freeze below the 20 tonne  "Meeting Place" statue at St Pancras International Station. The original freeze that was proposed by the sculptor was felt to be far too controversial and was "toned" down to meet the more general public taste. Certainly worth a look if you have time because its one of those art items that the more you look the more you see, and the way the artist handles perspective in metal is very impressive.

Plenty of views at :-

Welcome back Brian-hope you have not been camping! the weather here has been atrocious.

In answer to your WITW - Is it Raglan Castle ? and its claim to fame the first tower to be  undermined and partly collapsed when the mine supports were burnt out with forty fat pig carcasses? - just a guess!!! ;) :)

You got some bits right........... we did have some pretty wet days.....and it is a castle..........the rest.......wrong.

I knew I had used the wrong word when I typed it but did not know the term for mobile home living ! ;)

Your strong hint of perspective -are we talking a full size normal Castle or a miniature toy castle?
Title: Re: Where in the World
Post by: jarcadia on August 21, 2012, 01:16:31 pm
Full size
Title: Re: Where in the World

English, Welsh or foreign Castle?

Like Colin I'm puzzled by the 'perspective' reference.

It is a Welsh castle.
Clue 2 ........Where exactly is the horizon are you making assumptions?

A tower that has a claim to fame (but I have to admit that I had not heard about it)

Has certain similarities to a tower at Kidwelly Castle - is that right? I will investigate why it is famous if it is correct. :D

Geoff has it, obviously gave to many clues. :(   The tower leans more than the one at Pisa so they claim.  Didn't go in but it looks like it is about to topple over any minute!

At least I haven't seen a 'phallic' photo of it ...... there are a lot of the Pisa tower, made by spotty adolescents  :(
