Title: Torch Cinema Performance that looks of interest to Photo Group Members!
Post by: Geoffw on February 08, 2013, 09:19:22 am
Any member of the U3A Photography Group interested in joining me at a performance of "Chasing Ice"?  The ultimate use of time lapse photography!

Chasing Ice (12A)
Director: Jeff Orlowski
Starring: James Balog
USA, 2012, 1 hour 20 minutes
(http://www.torchtheatre.co.uk/uploads/Chasing_Ice_Web.jpg)
A phenomenal, passionate, unpreachy doc this provides insanely beautiful evidence of man-made climate change through time-lapse photography of the rapid retreat of the world?s glaciers. Twenty years ago National Geographic photographer James Balog was skeptical about climate change, then he started photographing ice. Now he?s a man on a mission, setting up the Extreme Ice Survey a huge global project to remotely film the glaciers? rapid disappearance using custom-built cameras designed to withstand 200mph winds and temperatures of minus 40 degrees. Thanks to the fabulous photography of the ice in all its glorious shapes and colours melting and constantly changing shape this is both extremely beautiful and extremely scary bringing home the reality of climate change like nothing I?ve ever seen. If a single picture is worth a thousand words then Chasing Ice tells volumes.

I am certainly planning to go to this Geoff and nearly went for tickets on Wednesday but run out of time.
What performance and date are you thinking of?
Personal preference is for the 5-30pm viewing on Friday 15th Feb ?

OK, Colin, let us make it the 5.30pm performance on Friday.  Let's see if any more come onboard over the weekend and I'll do a block booking.

BY EMAIL: from Frank..

Geoff

Thanks for the head up but will not be able to make it due to family commitments.

PS We have been to Norway, Sweden, and the Alps and do not need convincing. I agree about the colours as we have been inside a glacier and witnessed the real thing.

BY EMAIL: from Margaret

That would have been very interesting Geoff - unfortunately we are driving down to Cornwall on Friday!!

Perhaps we'll get to see it some other time - hope you enjoy it.

Popcorn?

I'm expecting all seven of us to bring sweets that are noisy to unwrap and difficulty to chew! .......... to share out throughout the performance!

Thanks for the company folks!  It is on again on Sunday night for those who missed it!

‎"Chasing Ice" - An unsettling movie, fantastic photography that might even move some of the climate change sceptics, but then I doubt it.

Thanks for organising the trip Geoff.  A very sobering message conveyed with fantastic filming and photography.

The extent of some of the opposition to the global warming science is illustrated here:  http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/feb/14/funding-climate-change-denial-thinktanks-network.

Hear, hear.
Some really fantastic and breath taking filming and time lapse photography.
Difficult to grasp the true scale of these events but certainly thought provoking.

What a great film! Magnificent photography but I would not wish to get into some of the locations just for a picture.
But the message behind the survey is serious and quite thought provoking.
