NEW FLAGSHIP CULTURAL CENTRE TO OPEN

The opening of Glan-yr-afon/The Riverside, Haverfordwest’s new flagship cultural centre, will be marked with a week-long programme of activities.

The exciting new development, on the town’s riverside, will welcome visitors for the first time on Friday 7th December from 10 am.

The opening day activities will begin at 11:15am with a Baby Rhyme Time, one of the venue’s regular weekly events, before carol singers from County Hall serenade customers with some festive favourites from 11:30am, in aid of PATCH.

The centrepiece of the opening celebrations will be a Family Fun Day on Saturday 8th December, with activities starting at 10:30am.

A special Baby Rhyme Time will kick-off the day, with Burns By Your Side Reading Dogs at midday. Parents will need to complete a permission form on the day to secure a place for the Reading Dogs session.

Challenge yourself to Lego Construction at 1pm, enjoy some Saturday Stories at 2pm before Coding Chaos with Robots! at 3:30pm.

Throughout the day, Beat the Clock on Glan-yr-afon/The Riverside’s games consoles, and get to know your new library with a special Scavenger Hunt.

During the week, Monday 10th to Saturday 15th December, enjoy a range of activities including Yap and Yarn, Creative Lego Club, Chatterbooks Reading Group and much more.

There’ll be a touch of festive sparkle to the opening week, with a special post box for children to post their letters to Father Christmas.

Father Christmas will reply to all letters but as he is very busy at this time of year, he will have to leave them at Glan-yr-afon/The Riverside for collection. The last post date will be Saturday 15th December, with the letters ready for collection from Wednesday 21st December.

Guided tours of the facility, which includes a library, gallery, visitor information and coffee shop, will be available throughout the week.

The venue’s gallery, in partnership with The National Library of Wales, will host two opening exhibitions showcasing items of both local and national importance.

The Story of Pembrokeshire is a permanent exhibition at Glan-yr-afon/The Riverside, focusing on the history, culture, arts and legends of Pembrokeshire.

Kyffin Williams: Land and Sea, will feature a fantastic collection of work from one of Wales’ most famous artists Sir Kyffin Williams to celebrate the centenary of his birth.

Glan-yr-afon/The Riverside is the result of an exciting partnership between Pembrokeshire County Council and The National Library of Wales.

Funding to build the facility came from a range of sources including Pembrokeshire County Council, Welsh Government, the Wolfson Foundation, the Foyle Foundation, and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

Haverfordwest Town Council have given a five-year funding package to ensure the library is able to open throughout the year on Saturday afternoons, the previous library having been open on Saturday mornings only.
