What's On in Pembrokeshire / Coast Watch 27th July

   Radio Pembrokeshire

Friday 27th July 2018 - Saturday 28th July 2018
Pembrokeshire’s very own Coastwatch station, situated in the Deer Park at Wooltack Point, is planning a 24 hour watch on 27 and 28 July 2018. We will be on duty from 18.00 watching out across St Brides Bay and Jack Sound. This exciting activity is intended to raise awareness of our presence and to fundraise so that we are able to enhance our service to this part of the County. Coastwatch is a national organisation but is run by committed volunteers who undertake full training to be Watchkeepers. Here, at Wooltack Point, we have just eight volunteers, yet we manage to provide coverage every day of the week. It’s not only incidents at sea we monitor but parts of the coast path too and, with our training, we can save lives by alerting the relevant authorities if assistance is needed. Many people don’t know that each station must fund itself and is run entirely by public subscription. Donations may be given in our collection boxes and via the website ‘JustGiving Wooltack.’ Twenty four hours of watching – how exciting! Watch out for us! 18-00 hrs 27th to 18-00 hrs 28th July And next time you’re in the Deer Park, come and say Hello. We will welcome you, unless we are very busy monitoring and watching. Scam telephone calls

I have written to warn all the lunch group as 1 of our members has told me they have received an abrupt & bogus phone call from an "officious well-spoken English lady" who insisted they should ring another number because "they owed money". They put the phone down & rang the police who told them that this was happening to a lot of older people in our area. Should you receive a phone call from 0191 308 2487 ignore it or alternatively, if you do answer, hang up immediately.

How to See Mars in 2018

An image of Mars captured by Damian Peach in June 2018.

The planet Mars is one of the most interesting planets to observe with a small telescope, but also one of the most difficult. The planet only gets close enough to Earth to give up much detail just once every 780 days (about two years and two months), and when it does make an apparition, it still appears relatively small compared to Jupiter or Saturn. But observing Mars is worth the effort. It’s the only planet to reveal an appreciable amount of surface detail in a small telescope, and it also features occasional surprises such as dust storms and local fogs and cloud banks.
